Lake Washington Fishing Tips

Getting depth

Cutthroat trout are plentiful in Lake Washington, but you need to have the right depth to find them. Most cutthroat are found in the 45-to-60-foot range. The average cutthroat trout measures 23 to 27 inches and weighs 5 to 6 pounds. Cutthroats prefer water temperatures of about 50 degrees, and that's what the temperature is at that depth.

Lures

The best lures for cutthroat and rainbow trout mimic the longfin smelt. They also go after nightcrawlers and frogs, but smelts seem to work best.

Technique

Ttrout are unlikely to go after any line that just sits in the water. Once you make your cast, go from a fairly quick drag through the water to a very slow one. Most Lake Washington veterans have had success by moving their lines quickly and then slowing down -- but not stopping.
