How to Become a Fishing Guide in Florida

    Find an area that has quality fishing. Besides the coastal waters along the eastern and western United States, Florida is a premier location to fish. Between the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic Ocean and various lakes and streams throughout the state, there are a variety of locations to fish.

    Visit the Florida Guides Association website. The site provides information about being a guides, fishing rules and fishing locations. General tools, fishing tips and a search portal to find local fishing guides are also available. Contact a guide to provide contact information.

    Go fishing. Learn about the lakes, streams and waters of Florida, and what type of fishing is available. Find hot spots that would be possible locations for your clientele. Go charter fishing with other guides to learn tips and information about the business.

    Visit your local Small Business Adminstration (SBA) office to find out what you need to do to make your business legitimate. Create a ficticious name for your charter business. Obtain a tax identification number for tax filing.

    Purchase a fishing boat. Look at your newspaper classified ads for a boat or visit a website that includes Boats.com. Decide what size and type you should buy. Choose between offshore, fresh water, bass and inshore saltwater.

    Advertise your business. Place a classified or display advertisement in your local newspaper. Find local fishing publications and place advertising.
