How to Make Tip Holders for Fishing Rod Racks

How to Make Tip Holders for Fishing Rod Racks

Instructions

    1

Choose the type of foam you want to use. It's best to use a stiff, closed cell polyethylene foam that resists tearing. It's inexpensive and easy to craft. You can find polyethylene foam at craft or home improvement stores. Don't use styrofoam unless you want little bits of styrofoam all over your floor.

    2

Determine the location on the wall where you will be placing the rod tip holder. You want the holder placed where it will fit all the rods. If you have some rods that are 6 feet and some that are 8 feet, don't place the rod tip holder at 7 feet unless you don't care about holding the tips of the shorter rods.

    3

Measure the distance between the tips of the rods while they are in the holder. Don't rely on the measurement between the holes in the rod holder itself. Fishing rods are much narrower at the tip than the base. If the rod holder has 3 inches between holes in the base, the distance between the rod tips may vary by as much as an inch. Use a pen to mark the block of foam where you will make the cuts.

    4

Cut the foam to match your measurements, but add an inch to the depth. If your rod holder is 16 inches wide and the tips are 3 inches from the wall, cut a block of foam that is at least 16 inches wide by 4 inches tall. The thickness of the foam block is less important, but you want at least an inch of thickness for durability.

    5

Measure the distance between the tips of the rods and the wall. This tells you how deep you need to cut the slits in the rod tip holder. Use a pen to mark the depth on the block of foam.

    6

Cut the slits with a utility knife.

    7

Mount the block of foam on the wall with double-sided tape.
