Choose a jig pole that meets your needs. Jig poles normally come in different versions of flexibility. If you are aiming for smaller fish like a pan fish, a loose rod is a good start. However, if you are looking for bigger fish like walleye, you want a little stiffness to help bring the fish in.
Select a fishing line specially designed for cold weather. These lines help avoid tangles that commonly occur in ice fishing and avoid getting stiff and keep the line from snapping. Normal lines will break in frigid water temperatures.
Tie on a hook that is complementary to the fish you are seeking. If you are hunting a small pan fish, a small hook is all you need. However, a large walleye will need a thicker hook to keep it on the line. Know the needs in order to zero in on the fish you are after.
Add sinkers to the line so the hook will go directly down in the ice hole. A common problem for ice fishers is having their hook drift. A sturdy sinker will help to keep the hook and bait in one place.
Attach the appropriate bait for the job. Many fish are attracted to worms. However, some prefer small insects, others prefer mice and still others would rather bite on other fish. Know what tastes the fish has before setting up an ice fishing pole.
