Season
Fishing for largemouth bass comes in seasons. Technically, you can catch the fish at any time of year; however, certain seasons are ideal for largemouth bass fishing. The warmer the water, the lower they swim, making them harder to catch. Spring and fall are the best seasons for bass fishing because the surface water cools, attracting the bass to the minnows and other small fish that swim near the surface during these parts of the year.
Lures
Having the right lures is vital for largemouth bass fishing. Lures with bright colors are especially attractive to these fish. Pond and lake waters can be especially murky, so the bright colors allow the lure to stand out. Bass are most often caught near the surface of the water; cast your lures around floating tree limbs and reeds, as bass hunt for small fish in those areas. Shallow lures include spinnerbaits, minnow plugs and streamers. A spinnerbait is ideal for shallow water, as it mimics the motions of a swimming or injured minnow. Live bait is always a good lure. The best live bait for bass include minnows and worms.
Reeling
Bass are intelligent fish and can often rid themselves of the hook. The best way to ensure your catch is to keep the fish in the water until the hook is securely in the fish's mouth. When the bass has taken the bait, quickly yank back the pole. This will drive the hook further into its mouth. After yanking, point the pole downward toward the water and slowly reel in the line. This will limit the bass' instinct to fight. This tip is especially effective for young fishers who may not have the strength to catch a bass in full fight.
