When to Fish
The peak season for catching walleyes in Canada is spring and summer because the walleyes generally stay close to the shoreline or hang out off rocky points and river mouths. The best time of day for catching walleyes is dusk or dawn. The walleye likes to hunt during these times as a specialized light-reflecting eye membrane allows it to see prey and lures more easily. Or night fish for walleyes, between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., as large females tend to come closer to shore during this period.
Lure and Bait Selection
Use a variety of different baits and lures to catch walleyes in Canada. The most traditional and time-tested varieties include jigs, lures that you bounce on and off the bottom, and nightcrawlers, large earthworms that you fish in the same manner. Jigs consist of a weighted metal ball, or jig-head, a hook and skirting that surrounds the hook. The crank bait is a plastic fish-shaped lure, which typically has hooks at its front and back ends. Cast crank baits out and then reel, or crank, them back in.
Lure Colors
Since lure color can be a crucial factor, make the right color selection to ensure the possibility of pulling in a monster catch. During springtime, stick with bright colors for your lures, such as white, yellow, red or chartreuse. Since walleyes are incredibly aggressive during the spring in defense of their spawning grounds, use bright colors to capture their attention and provoke them to strike. During the summer, the walleyes become less aggressive, so try more natural colors, such as brown, black and silver.
