Tips on Shore Walleye Fishing

Tips on Shore Walleye Fishing

Time Frame

Choosing the right time period to shore fish for walleye is imperative. Summer months send walleye into deeper waters, as they seek cooler temperatures. Summer months will require the shoreline angler to make longer casts into deeper water, presenting the lure or bait near the bottom. Fishing during spring months increases success rates, as walleye move closer to shore, both to spawn and feed. The fall and winter pose difficult time frames for walleye anglers. Fish feed less and move away from the shore, due to vegetation death.

Tackle and Bait

Using the correct tackle when walleye fishing shorelines can increase success. Bright colors attract aggressive walleyes during spring months, making white, yellow and red jigs good options. A quick retrieve up and down a shoreline will trigger a walleye's instinct to feed and protect its territory. Summer months and hotter days require a further cast, usually into deeper waters, using natural-colored lures. Brown and green lures retrieved at a slow pace work well during these months, as walleye are moving slower and less aggressively.

Structure

Walleye seek natural structure as a means of protection. Weed beds provide promising shoreline cover for walleye during spring months. Shore anglers have easy access along these stretches. During winter months weed beds die, causing walleye to move into deeper water. Any structure, including rocks and boat docks can be targeted by shoreline anglers, as these areas provide equally viable areas of protection for walleye.
